🥳AI paper published! Congratulations to Kate Watkins, Uri Ladabaum, Sara Singer, Roger Bohn and the team!In the space of Endoscopy, AI is seen as a prime candidate to revolutionise the detection of polyps, and thus reduce the risk of Colon Cancer.⁉️So what happens when RCT-validated AI tools fail in the real world? Is there something about the human-AI interaction at play?We sought to understand these questions. Some key points:🔦 Despite the AI not living up to expectations, users had high trust in the tool.🔦It was difficult for users to explain why the AI was not working.🔦Implementation and ongoing use of AI may require a full suite of features to ensure its continued effectiveness.🔦There is a real risk of under-scrutinised deployment of AI in healthcare systems and the corresponding opportunity cost of these tools.📃Full Paper (open access):https://lnkd.in/gFDkuqgYAmerican College of GastroenterologyAmerican Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE)

☄️This really was a fascinating conversation about making a dent in the universe.I've always had 'ideas' about fixing healthcare from the outside in - but never really thought seriously about entrepreneurship.I think this was mainly because baking into the culture of medicine. Entrepreneurship was never really seen as a serious option. I had no grounded understanding or mentors to follow. You have to break so many cultural norms in medicine to put your hand up and take that brave step to go out on your own. That's why I enjoyed our conversation so much. Josh does a great job dispelling many myths in this space and highlights how ANYONE can learn to be an inventor. My time at Stanford further emphasised this positive, ambitious and optimistic approach to solving big problems yourself - as every second post-grad I spoke to wanted to change the world.I hope this inspires a few more Clinicians to learn from Josh and the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign methods of innovation and design! To listen to the full episode:📙Substack: https://lnkd.in/gxmqPnQK🍎 Apple: https://lnkd.in/gbKh3iwm

Why are physicians happy with the status quo?According to recent research in JAMA, relative to non-physicians, US physicians are less likely to vote, attend public meetings, volunteer, or otherwise be politically engaged.Per the authors: "Physicians could play a greater role in influencing health-related public policy given their expertise and socioeconomic opportunities".This leaves a vacuum that allows for stigma and misunderstanding about healthcare - particularly for those who are homeless or have mental illness and drug addiction challenges.⬇️Listen below to hear the full clip:https://lnkd.in/gAbaUeCu🎧Full podcast:https://lnkd.in/g6vYQgAg📑Reference: https://lnkd.in/gtB8x5VF

Moral injury as a cause of burnout is seldom discussed. This is the psychological harm to healthcare providers when their values of compassion are transgressed by being unable to help a patient adequately. This is particularly evident when caring for patients who experience homelessness. In her recent research in California, homelessness researcher and medical doctor Margot Kushel MD shares her findings and the evidence-based policy opportunities to combat this moral injury and the greater political failure. Two points stood out to me:⚡First is the framing; "Homelessness is an experience that people have, not a statement of who they are.”⚡Next, recognition that homelessness occurs in conjunction with structural conditions that produce and reproduce inequalities.⚡Third - we already have an evidence-based and effective approach...⚡And finally, how healthcare professionals have a key role in solving this issue.Listen to more below⬇️⬇️

Very cool to see podcast guest Margot Kushel MD feature in the White House 2024 Economic Report. There are many myths and unhelpful narratives when it comes to understanding and resolving homelessness. Her research is key in highlighting the drivers and policy choices.A favourite line from her research: "Homelessness is an experience that people have, not a statement of who they are". This emphasises how often dehumanising language is used to distance ourselves from our fellow humanbeings and avoid helpful policy changes. As Clinicians we're often put in positions of moral injury when faced with support patients who's social and environment drivers of health are out of our control. However, Dr Kushel is a leading light in showing how clinician's involved in research and advocacy can take and do make an impact.Listen to more below⬇⬇
