Kelly, 76 Ex-Suffolk assistant register A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. today in the Infant Jesus, Church in South Brookline for Arthur A. Kelly, who rose from file clerk to first assistant register during his 50 years at Suffolk County Probate Court. Mr. Kelly died Wednesday in his home in Chestnut Hill.
He was 76. Mr. Kelly's patience and helpfulness with neophyte lawyers and unrepresented litigants was legendary. "You can get ground up dealing with large numbers of people and mounds of paper," Paula Gold, state secretary of consumer affairs, said yesterday, recalling her first visits to the court as an inexperienced attorney with Greater Boston Legal Services two decades ago. "'He was personal.
In that court, he stood out." Mr. Kelly was so shy and selfeffacing that he never discussed with colleagues his service as a Marine Corps staff sergeant on Guadalcanal and in China in World War II. And he insisted on walking quietly away from the courthouse in September 1984 into retirement without a farewell party. A native of Roxbury, Mr. Kelly became a court employee in August 1934.
He attended Suffolk University Law School at night and graduated in 1941. He was promoted to 4th assistant register in 1961 and first assistant in 1967. Leonard of Canton, Anne L. and Sally a judge in Boston Municipal Court, both of Charlestown; two sisters, Rose Fallon of Wellesley and Gertrude McMullin of Allston; and four grandchildren.
