Driscoll Jr. Globe Staff Dr. Maurice Fremont-Smith of Commonwealth avenue, Back Bay, distinguished Boston physician and internationally-known pioneer in the detection of cancer of the cervix, died yesterday at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital following an illness of several weeks. He was 88. As a specialist in internal medicine and a diagnostician, Dr.

Fremont-Smith is credited with introducing to the medical world Dr. George Papanicolaou's method of detecting early vagin*l cancer in women through the smear test method. His articles proving the validity of the test were first published in medical journals in 1943. Although they were initially greeted with disbelief a and skepticism, the test became generally accepted. The method is now in use throughout world and is believed to have cut the death rate from cancer of the cervix in half.

A tall, lean, soft-spoken man, with twinkling blue eyes and a lantern jaw, Dr. Fremont-Smith retired from active medical practice in 1967. Between 1946 and 1963 he was assigned to St. Raphael's in West Medford, Star of the Sea in East Boston and St. Mary of the Angels in Roxbury. His first pastorate was served 1963 to 1966 at St. Anselm's in Sudbury.

Fr. Phinney's final pastorate was at St. Monica's in South Boston. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury.

William Leonard, 77 Longtime retail supervisor TOPSFIELD William H. Leonard, 77, a longtime employee of H.P. Hood Charlestown, died yesterday in Hunt Memorial Hospital, Danvers, after a long illness. Mr. Leonard, of 69 Washington street, was born in Chelsea and was a resident of Everett for 45 years before moving to Topsfield in 1976.

He was employed for H.P. Hood as a retail supervisor for 31 years. He retired in 1966. He is survived by his wife, Anna M. (DeMoor); two sons, William A.

There, as he put it, "I spent the best part of a year operating on wounded bandits, on children with cataracts or mastoids, putting up fractures, and generally supervising the medical work of the unit." Working his way home across the Pacific as an assistant to the steward on a freighter, Dr.

Fremont-Smith started practice in Boston in the fall of 1920. For many years he lived and had an office in a spacious town house at the corner of Beacon and Hereford streets, Back Bay. Summers were spent at Manchester, where he "dabbled" in painting as a hobby. A convert to the Roman Catholic: Church in 1933, he was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, the American Medical the American Clinical and Clinatological Assn. and the author of many articles for leading medical journals.
